Vape Detectors Coming To PHS, Briar
Vape detectors will be installed at Perkins High School and Briar Middle School in coming days to deter students’ use of the nicotine delivery devices.
During the Perkins Local Schools Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, September 13, Perkins High School assistant Principal Drew Davie updated Board members on a system that the district will implement. Detectors will be installed in each of the bathrooms at the high school. When a sensor detects vaping, an alert will be sent to teachers and staff.
If students are caught with vaping devices, consequences as spelled out in the building handbook, are given, he said.
“Our ultimate goal is to deter the use of vapes,” Mr. Davie told the Board.
The use of vapes, not only for nicotine abuse, but also marijuana abuse, continues to be a problem at the high school. The sensors can detect nicotine and marijuana, Mr. Davie said.
“This is not just a Perkins thing, but an Ohio thing and a national thing,” Mr. Davie said.
Board members welcomed the vape detectors, and directed the Perkins Schools administration to install the detectors at Briar Middle School. The devices will be installed at Briar after they are installed at PHS.
