PHS Satellite Set For Launch Into Space

UPDATED: New time and date for launch.

A piece of Perkins High School is expected to go into space aboard a supply courier to the International Space Station in September.

The PHS Robotics Club, with the help of volunteers and donors, has been building the satellite, dubbed "Foras Promineo" (Latin for outreach) for the past four school years.

PHS was notified in August that the satellite is slated for launch and bound for the International Space Station at approximately 6 p.m. on Sunday, September 14. Please be advised that launch times may change due to weather and other circumstances.

Once aboard the ISS, it will be ferried to the appropriate orbit and released into space.

The PHS satellite, which is about the size of a loaf of bread, will be tethered via radio waves to ground control stations. The satellite houses a game based on robotics competitions on Earth, whereby players manipulate a robotic arm to drop balls into a target.

The game will be available to other schools across the nation. The PHS Robotics Team proposed the satellite to NASA, and the space agency approved the initial plan in 2021.

The proposal was among those made by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California Polytechnic State University, and the University of Colorado.
