PHS Freshman Wins VFW Voice Of Democracy Essay Contest

Perkins High School freshman Sarah West has won the local 2025 Voice of Democracy essay contest hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars unit in Port Clinton. Her essay has now been entered into the statewide competition.

Sarah is among 12 students across Ohio competing for scholarship ranging from $11,000 for first place to $2,500 for those in 6th to 12th place. Winners of the state competition will be announced at the VFW banquet on January 30 in Dublin.

Winners of the statewide competition then have an opportunity to compete on the national level.
For the 2025 competition, students in grades 9-12 were provided with the prompt: “How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?”

“While it is my honor to raise the flag or stand for the national anthem,” wrote Sarah in her essay, “true patriotism is more about showing love for our country through everyday actions. For me, patriotism means giving back to my community, respecting those who serve, and striving to make a positive difference whenever I can.”

Sarah’s full essay is available here.

Congratulations – and good luck – Sarah.
